ESB 5.6K3UX 3-way speaker kit with UMA and 5.6K3CX crossover

Woofer 5.165

Great attention has been paid to the axial and radial ventilation of the voice coil, this to guarantee high power handling, reduced distortion and greater durability. The metal parts worked from solid and refined material are CNC machined for maximum linearity of magnetic flux and minimum magnetic loss.

This reduces distortion at high power levels. Dual-layer CCAW (Copper Clad Aluminium Wire) voice coil of 25 mm wound on an aluminum former for exceptional power handling and distortion-free reproduction to handle the most demanding musical passages. The exponential cone with polymer matrix reinforced with carbon fiber ensures extraordinary rigidity combined with very low weight. The ABS frame reinforced with carbon fiber with eight double spokes, anti-resonant and self-extinguishing, ensures a drastic reduction of the rear reflections of the cone. The frame design ensures high structural and torsional rigidity.

The exclusive ESB design of the dual-wave rubber suspension TSW (Twin Symmetrical Wave) allows excursion with perfect progression and linearity. This characteristic guarantees natural reproduction of low frequencies both at low and high volume. The Conex® dust cap allows smooth and gentle travel at low excursions and gently restrains the cone at high excursions, thus increasing the useful frequency range.

Unit 5.UMA

This special and exclusive component is a concept born in the '70s, its purpose is to concentrate the emissions of midrange and tweeter in a single virtual point. This minimizes phase delays and irregularities at the crossover point (For more information go to page The Phase). Both components use a large neodymium magnet optimized with computer simulations (FEA) to achieve great efficiency and improve linearity throughout the entire voice coil excursion. Great attention has been paid to the ventilation of the two components, through multiple axial ventilation holes.

Residual resonance is eliminated by the damping material under the dome called dB Cloth®. This extends the frequency response to the lower limits and reduces harmonic distortion. The high modulus carbon fiber domes with integrated soft fabric suspension (tweeter) and synthetic foam (midrange) offer excellent heat resistance, reduced weight and excellent damping, with a natural and linear response and very low frequency extension.

Carbon fiber ensures extremely natural and linear reproduction, with excellent extension. Combined together the two components are able to reproduce with perfect linearity the entire spectrum from 500Hz to 25KHz. Small permanent magnets hold the grilles in the correct position and are easy to remove for customization.

Passive crossovers are used in 2 and 3-way speaker systems to electrically convey low tones to the woofers and high notes and overtones to the high-frequency speakers. If a passive crossover is to perform its function without compromise, it must be able to handle extreme variations in dynamics, the entire range of audio frequencies, complex transients and the variable impedance of a speaker load.

ESB passive crossovers are carefully designed to integrate the exact characteristics of ESB speakers. Each crossover circuit controls the signal to the high and low frequency speakers, so as to maintain a homogeneous acoustic response across the entire audio spectrum. Of course, such sophisticated design requires very tight tolerances in production. Normal crossovers, for example, often use electrolytic capacitors with tolerances of +/- 20% and metal core inductors.

The response across these crossover regions is irregular and the characteristics vary from unit to unit. All ESB networks, instead, use only non-inductive dielectric capacitors in polypropylene or mylar (not electrolytic units) individually tested to meet rigorous ESB tolerances. The special inductors used in ESB networks have extremely low insertion loss, so that no speaker system driving power is wasted in the network. To prevent interference between inductors, they have been installed with a 90° rotation. This arrangement cancels out the interactions.
