Passive crossovers are used in 2-way and 3-way speaker systems to electrically direct low tones to the woofers and high notes and overtones to the tweeters. If a passive crossover is to perform its function without compromise, it must be able to handle extreme variations in dynamics, the entire range of audio frequencies, complex transients and the variable impedance of a speaker load.

ESB passive crossovers are carefully designed to integrate the exact characteristics of ESB speakers. Each crossover circuit controls the signal to the tweeters and woofers, so as to maintain a uniform acoustic response across the entire audio spectrum. Of course, such sophisticated design requires very tight tolerances during production. Normal crossovers, for example, often use electrolytic capacitors with tolerances of +/- 20% and metal core inductors.

The response across these crossover regions is irregular and the characteristics vary from unit to unit. All ESB networks, on the other hand, use only non-inductive dielectric capacitors in polypropylene or mylar (not electrolytic units) individually tested to meet ESB's rigorous tolerances. The special inductors used in ESB networks have extremely low insertion loss, so that no speaker system driving power is wasted in the network. To prevent interference between inductors, these have been installed with a 90° rotation.

This arrangement cancels out the interactions. All resistances used to align the level of the various speakers with each other are of non-inductive type and their power is significantly overrated. A switch located on the output side allows the user to adjust the tweeter level to two options based on the distance of the tweeter from the listener (and for the midrange in the 5.6K3 CX model). Both input and output connections are robust two-way audio connectors with locking screws. They accept cables up to 4.5 mm gauge (6 AWG). The printed circuit board was also not left to chance. Thick copper traces limit signal loss.
