What is digital radio? Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), from the English language digital audio broadcast, is the digital radio broadcast system that allows the sound transmission of radio programs with quality comparable to that of a compact disc. Digital coded transmission presents advantages and disadvantages compared to analog transmission.

Lesser influence or absence of interference on the signal.

Automatic station search based on the receiver's position.

Improvement of existing services and introduction of innovative multimedia services such as DLS, PAD and N-PAD.

Signal multiplexing, or the possibility of allowing multiple signals to share the same channel and consequently multiple broadcasters able to share the same transmission medium without interference between them (as already happened for TV transmission with the change from analog TV to digital TV).

DAB also implements multimedia features. Digital transmission allows the dissemination of texts or images alongside radio transmission.

DAB+, unlike DAB, with equal signal quality and power, allows you to double or even triple the number of programs transmitted in a single bouquet, possibly allowing the insertion of other radio services.

In Italy the shutdown of FM radio for the definitive transition to digital, as well as in many other countries has not yet been considered or planned, also considering the poor appeal (the number of FM radio broadcasters in Italy amounts to about a thousand, with a unique offering at a world level) as an additional offer of DAB channels.
